Has a very flat look to it. Tension doesn’t hold up.

Goes roundabout Sunset Boulevard; a riff on entourage in celebrity culture. But this looks incredibly dated for its time. Marty made Taxi Driver two years before this film. Wilder quips lose their charm and it feels awfully stagey. Part of the reason why I guess movies look dated is that they want to have photography of later period, everyone’s no longer in on the bit.

Hard to believe this came out in 1960. Starts off from body horror and quietly morphs into a psychological drama. It has a malevolent tone throughout and still remains extremely grounded in its reality. Parents are indeed capable of evil but corruption has a haunting effect, even for the children they claim it serves.

    Barbie

    ★★★

Barbie was goofy fun and gently reassuring in equal measure. But it was not exceptional in its commentary or as heartfelt as it should’ve been. Barbieworld’s design gets priority, shaping its writing rather than vice-versa. It also tries to take on quite a few of the real world’s issues at once. This leads to a lot being said but not shown. At times, Barbie gets caught up between its seriousness and silliness. It’s tough to accept the spread of patriarchy…
