Lost Highway 1997
I found the emptiness of the beginning so upsetting, if I were not watching this in a theater I would have hit pause.
One of Lynch's more inscrutable films,
It feels like Renee/Alice are constantly performing for the men in their life, men capable of great violence, until they final get what they want and are free to take off the mask.
I do think the lost highway is the mechanism that allows the cell phone guy to be in two places at once, connects Fred and Peter, and allows Fred to seemingly time travel.

More comedy in here than I was expecting. It still had the feeling of a play, but it was filmed in such a way that its artistic lineage was not oppressive.

Reminded me of the time I worked at a drug rehab, a little bit. How things can be stupid and dark and also so, so funny if you take two steps back and pretend it's not happening to real person. Because you need some kind of defense against all the bullshit in the world. The stuff that happens organically and the stuff that culture decides to produce.
