    Mad Max

    ★★★★½

The Road Warrior and Fury Road obviously deserve all the love and acclaim they get, but anyone who says the first Mad Max is middling or bad warrants a side-eye. It's always been a personal favorite, but I can't imagine not being impressed by George Miller's direction (aided hugely by Byron Kennedy), the low-budget ingenuity, the real sense of danger, the pre-apocalyptic vibes, the eccentric cast of characters, and the depiction of one man's inevitable dehumanization that hits so hard…

My decision to not listen to any of this film's score until I saw it in theaters paid off beautifully. There's a lot of compliments I can pay the film but no one exaggerated one bit about how Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross killed it. Thrilling stuff

Obviously the Oscars are a bit irrelevant and usually get a lot wrong, but it's criminal how overlooked this film is this year. As of February 23rd 2025 when I post this review, it's still my top movie of 2024.

That means it clears the low bar of being better than Texas Chainsaw 3D while also being fairly on par with 2017's Leatherface (which would be the superior film if not for the 'which character is Leatherface'…

    The Thing

    ★★★★★

Even though the aspect ratio was off & the screen wasn't wide enough, seeing John Carpenter's magnum opus—now 40 years old—in a movie theater with a great sound system hits different like you wouldn't believe. The notes of that main theme penetrate your brain and soul, and the sounds of the titular alien pierce your ears (in a good way) like never before.

I remember going to Blockbuster as a very young child and seeing a copy of The Thing From…
