Really wasted opportunity - with these leads and this director, this should’ve been an easy 3*
Rarely see something look so slick and so bland at the same time
Pacing is all over the place, perhaps by design given the main character’s condition, are we meant to feel like we’re suffering from it too?

This was good fun, moved at a decent pace - and while some of the VFX are obviously dated by now, others still really hold up, and the film has a great handmade feel to it. I can imagine if I’d seen this at a younger age I’d have loved it
It feels like an age since I’ve seen a new release this entertaining for the sake of being entertaining, instead of a blockbuster that - while fun - is part of some huge franchise cross-over shared universe cinema plan. Obviously it’s still a franchise film now, it’s a Top Gun sequel, and off the back of its success a spin-off is surely due to be announced any day.
But for now this is a great time at the movies.

Not Marvel’s first dud as some have called it, but certainly not peak Marvel.
Going against the grain of a formula that’s worked for 20+ movies before is a bold choice, and not necessarily a bad one if the studio wants to keep these movies from getting stale - but if you’re going to buck the trend then it has to at least be for a reason, it has to be because there’s a specific story you want to tell…
