The codas feel too long to me and slightly dissipate its dramatic impact, as maybe does the family's perfect happiness at the outset - but otherwise a really affecting film. Amazing central performance and wonderfully realised setting.

Autumn Sonata 1978
Most obviously amazing for the acting and such a persuasive emotional dynamic.
But also the two shots are so wonderful, as are the matching front-on shots at the end.
Feels interestingly balanced between something naturalistic and something more theatrical with the monologues, occasional fourth wall breaks, etc.

Glad I showed up for this one (sorry). Quiet film which allows its themes and characters to gently unfold, which gives a generous space for interpretation. Much like life.
Happy it finally got UK distribution but kinda depressing it's such a limited, short and late release.

Promising Young Woman 2020
I definitely enjoyed this - thought Carey Mulligan gave a good performance. But her character is quite schematic - a sarky avenging angel. There is an effort to show the grief underneath but I wonder if the thriller/rom-com hybrid is already a lot to pull off and sort of drowns out Cassie's emotions.
Also I'm not sure it deals with its issues in quite so nuanced a way as it would like. There's a touch of cartoonishness to the jock…
