    Cold War

A decade+ spanning love story that never really resonates because we never really get to know the protagonists, nor see why they are so mad for one another. I get that love can be inexplicable, and that we are often drawn to people without a clear sense of why, but there's like no indication of what is keeping these two pining for each other after years apart.

It seems like Pawlikowski is more interested in how historic and political circumstances impact his characters than actually providing space for them to become people.

    The cinematography looks great though.

Light and relatively drama-free character study of two people. It's a sweet and kind movie with a lot of care for it's characters, but not much oomph. Honestly I found the few scenes about the behind-the-scenes of the porn industry more interesting than most of the rest.

    The Arrival

Imagine if a good-natured UFO-cult made a caveman Close Encounters of the Third Kind, then dropped a low budget Star Wars into the middle of it, and then copied the climax of 2001 except instead of the Star baby it ended with an old lady from suburban California. And this was all done with home made special effects.
