I am SO glad that they didn’t make this a miniseries as originally announced. Only one or two segments overstay their welcome (and not by much) but all six would’ve in tv format. I’ll get to specific thoughts in a second but just real quick: fantastic cast, they shot the hell out of it, and the music (both score and songs) is terrific. The whole thing is an examination of the Western and how it can strengthen or subvert American…

Great and moody neo-noir, perfectly timed for this moody-ass week.

I love the simplicity of the title SO much because the whole “can’t escape the life” and “one last job” thing was probably cliché in the 20s but that doesn’t detract from the very real fact that it’s been relevant throughout that time, too. These thoughts are often dealt with on the backdrop of criminals or other larger-than-life figures because films are intended to be exciting but the truth of…

A distinctly beautiful film that is emotionally impactful but never becomes upsetting. It's incredible how thoroughly it depicts loneliness and longing without constantly making me feel crushed. That's probably more an indication of my place in life now than anything else but also speaks to the film's ability to weave in humor and creativity. A thoroughly heartfelt journey that will stick with me and, I hope, both scare and delight some kid whose parents let them watch it by mistake. The type of movie to instill a lifelong love and respect for animation and da moviesh.

“You can be a hero and still be wrong”

    Hell yeah, now we’re talking!

Absolutely insane it’s taken me this long to get to this one. Another movie in the “For Dom” canon. Breathtaking animation with a massive sense of scale, befitting its titular creature, and an excellent blend of storytelling. Never too reliant on jokes but never grim despite the violence/intensity. Excellent balance, not surprised to see it was from the Big Hero 6/Moana fella.

    Whenever I have an…

So when these pitch meetings happen for animated sequels and whatnot, could anyone have just said “what if we instead made the best movie ever made?” and no one did until the goddamn heroes that made this flick?!? Why isn’t every movie this movie??? It should be!

Like, truly it has everything. The jokes are on-point, every character is fleshed out in an interesting/meaningful way, and the animation is phenomenal. It came out the gate with some Shadow of the…

Top tier grimy shit! A movie about two dirtbags who hate each other, one who possesses all the on-paper attributes of a typical film action hero and also the most heinous attributes for even a film criminal. The actual protagonist is a controlling and spiteful little weasel. Huge compliments, both. I haven’t seen Nick Nolte a super ton but I’ll be shocked if I enjoy a performance of his more than this, pitch perfect casting as the worst lawyer archetype.…
