What if the Hero was sent on the quest to defeat the Villain... by this Villain himself? And the Villain often acted like a twisted Mentor? The result is a brilliant variation on the Hero's Journey known as The Hitcher, which is one of my top 4 films on Letterboxd. After this rewatch, I want to shout from the rooftops that it's also one of the best films ever made.

I don't say such things lightly. This is my 1068th…

I just finished the movie and I'm sitting here in a state of shock that someone whose feature debut I respected but didn't get (my review of We're All Going to the World's Fair) could make a film that is so perfect and so much for me. This is a sign to never give up on directors, especially early in their careers.

I'm a bit shocked that I watched this film a few times as a child (as a tween but still). The sleaziness factor is so strong here! I think some of it went over my head. But some for sure didn't. And it's a different film than I remembered altogether: so dark, nihilistic, often ugly. Michael Caine is actually scary here.

And all that violence against women! Strange how child Alicja could tolerate it better than adult Alicja. I guess…

I’m positively surprised. From a film advertised as a metaslasher filled with nostalgia for 1970s, I certainly didn’t expect a serious meditation on the role of sex and desire in our lives!

This film takes its time to get to the bloody parts and while it delivers in this department, neither gore, nor the titillating scenes are the most important aspects. The filmmakers use large part of the plot for... building the atmosphere and character development! Ha! The director/screenwriter Ti…

I don't know how to rate this film. It's so anxiety-inducing that I can't say it is a pleasant watch but it's also so amazing, I want to say it's a must-watch. And for me it was a rewatch. You know what, I think it must be five stars.

Helen Mirren and Bob Hoskins play the mobsters who would like not to be called mobsters, thank you very much, but are mobsters through and through. The problem (for them) arises…
