Two children hop on a train, in search of a father figure whom they fear might not exist. They wander through empty roads, bleak countrysides, and crowded towns, unsure of what to do with the silence. They are shrouded, not just by the mist, but also by the horrors, emptiness, and indifference that surround them. This is a tale about adolescence, but it is also a tale about God—or more specifically, the silence of God.

Many comedies rely on establishing norms before subverting the expectation that they follow such norms. Wes Anderson's films are no different. He often creates quirky characters with the sole intent of subverting norms we perceive. For example, Dignan, in Bottle Rocket, helps Anthony break out of a psychiatric hospital—something expected as mental institutions can be nasty. We later learned that Anthony is in the hospital of his own accord, which is an expectation subverted—who checks himself into a mental institution…

I have a teddy bear that has my name sewn inside of it. My mom made it for me before I was born. I did not realize how much the teddy bear means for her, and how much it would mean to me now. At some point, and I don’t remember when, I was mad at my mom, and I threw the teddy bear at a wall, chipping its eye. I didn’t play with it much after that.

    Now that…

    Long Day's Journey into Night

This movie is gorgeous. Haven’t seen anything as pretty since This is not a Burial… in December (approximately 70 movies ago!). In a scene of the couple discussing an abortion, the level of loneliness and separation between them is captured through character movements, positioning, and a murky, gridded (as if shattered) reflection. This style of shooting conversations would pair really well with Hu Bo’s in An Elephant Sitting Still.

Although there are a few padded or distracting moments, mostly consisting…

    The Beekeeper

    ★★

A decrepit beekeeper, frequently accompanied by a young, carefree girl whom he projects his incestuous desires upon, goes on a journey to discover himself.

Hate to rate it this low, especially after watching the fantastic ending, but I can't ignore The Beekeeper's biggest defect: it is dangerously close to being an old man's fantasy. Its success hinges on the believability of the girl and the beekeeper's relationship, on it bringing out a contrast of the future and the past, the…

Patrick makes his first appearance in the DCEU… and he has put on weight for his role.

Setups after setups, pay-offs after pay-offs. There’s no time to breathe, no time to let the narrative sink in… and that’s exactly what makes this kind of dumb fun work. There are some hiccups with the action scenes, most notably where John Cena receiving a punch and throwing himself in the most unnatural direction, but it can be easily ignored when scenes like…
