WitchHammer (1970) exceeded my expectations as a 70s horror enthusiast. It forgoes the special effects we see in modern films, instead painting a stark portrait of how religion weaponizes fear and suspicion.

Set in 17th century Czech Republic, it dives into themes of innocence, corruption, and moral ambiguity. How does one define heresy? How easily can power be twisted to serve injustice?

This might be a hot take, but I wasn’t entirely sold on this film. I admire Tarkovsky’s vision, both visually and philosophically. However, much like Solaris, I found many moments lingering longer than they needed to. That’s not to say there wasn’t intention behind itβ€”the themes and meaning are clearly profoundβ€”but it was extraordinarily difficult to sit through for this runtime.

The dialogue is thought-provoking, but often dragged out, and I had to push myself to keep going to see what else would be revealed. While I can appreciate the artistry, I don’t think I could sit through a rewatch.
