“Look at me, and tell me if you’ve known me before”
David Lynch unabashed and at his best, this film was the most strange and transcendent piece of art I’ve consumed in a very, very long time. It’s carved a corner of surreal horror just next to the Kafkaesque in the only way I’ve seen cinema be able to hold it.

Banality in film is a really dangerous decision to make, as the implications behind the stillness work to flesh out the characterization in a meaningful way. Kiarostami and Lynch have made the best choices in banal direction in my opinion, as even if their characters are still they never feel like mannequins. Unfortunately, all these characters did feel like hollow statues to me - the film in its weakest moments seemed hopeful…
