  I am someone who eats up dysfunctional family oscar bait dramas but this one did not quite cut it. I thought the dialogues were too full. Too rehearsed. The direction was too self aware and jarring and I couldn't fully get into it until the last 30 minutes or so.

  I did start liking it once I found the funnier bits of it. The scenes with the hospice carer, Angel, were gold. And it's always a treat to see Natasha Lyonne.

  I see that I gave this film 3 stars, years ago.

  Watched it again today. It's been so long that I'd forgotten most of the details, ha. I still remember the core of it, though.

  I guess that's the point.
  5 stars.

  I don't care if people say that this movie is poverty porn or exists just to elicit sympathy. Of course it elicits sympathy. That doesn't negate the fact that this is a brilliant movie, with the most breathtaking acting from a 12 year old that I have ever seen.

Following
