There’s a lot here that should play right into my bag (creative editing, confrontation of societal woes, Juliette Binoche, minimal score, patient as all hell), but I couldn’t help but come out feeling a little ambivalent. Starts off with a riveting initial confrontation, only for each trailing story to slowly become less and less engaging and further into the mundane, albeit with the occasional peak in energy.

Still, a fascinating experience that remains a treat to look at, Haneke seriously knows how to operate the damn camera.

Razor-sharp sound design, VERY good set pieces, total narrative and thematic vacancy. Reads like Garland originally wanted to lean into the “dude what if there was um a civil fuckin war dude” aspect and make a real heartpumper but instead decided to waffle around NPR totebag lib moral questions without ever making a solid fucking statement.

If you’re gonna do the corny centrist apolitical thing just make schlock, don’t pad your shit with subtle-as-a-brick “war bad” moments for people who…

Unrepentantly gothic and surprisingly bold in many facets, a real treasure trove of tastefully modernized horror by way of the old masters.

From the first whispers of Eggers’ Nosferatu finally seeing the light of day after a near-decade of clerical hell, I was admittedly weary, both in response to the cast and a latent fear of the studio over-correcting the original tale into something more digestible by the post-A24 art-horror audience. Imagine my surprise when, in fact, Lily Rose-Depp absolutely…
