Didn't know anything about Sokurov before watching this. "Heir to Tarkovsky" is really a befitting title. Extremely long, meditative takes with the perfect atmosphere. Dostoevsky's world is barren, Godless and very psychologically bent and Sokurov managed to translate that perfectly into this inscrutable film. Aimless wandering of a nameless man, bleached surroundings, dialogue of desperation.

Off to a great start. Every moment in this domestic horror tale drips with tension and suspense. The music is especially disconcerting and Silayan gives one of the best male performances I have seen as a domineering, patriarchal tyrant.
The film is equally scathing as a portrayal and criticism of the Marcos dictatorship. Everyone who stands by and watches is equally victim and perpetrator of the overbearing oppression that befalls them. And when the dictator falls, he takes everyone with him.
