For all this movie's flaws (and there are many) it's the only Jane Austen adaptation with a modern setting outside of a high school that works. Really works. High school is really the only modern setting where the social norms have about as much impact as a Regency setting, but they feel believable here in a close knit Atlanta community where the gulf between middle class and the wealthy is also so extreme. Wanted to watch an Olivia de Havilland films as my own personal tribute to one of our best actresses, and so glad I chose this one. This film's sense of humor is as delightful as it is dark, and the pacing, acting, and action scenes are fantastic. It has a kind of pacing that I think is missing from a lot of films now, that refuses to characterize its leads as predestined and very subject to sudden changes in fortune.
