It is not often that you come across a film that can melt and break your heart at the same time. Maborosi has its fair share of tears but also scattered moments of joy; it is bitter and sweet; it is filled quietness but the silence is loud, even deafening at some points; it is lies beneath the rays of love and the shadow of heart breaks; it is not only a film about life but it is also life itself.
Wandering, wandering, and wandering…That is the eternal, cursed state of humans.

Going into a film with high expectations is poison.
It is well-made, to say the least, especially the first half, yet, the second part loses it a little bit. Ironically enough the closing line of the film is “it’s about the destination” but the film seems to be more about “the journey.”
Some very random, questionable, formal choices that I am not a big fan of, and some details that probably flew over my head.
    There were much more intriguing…

A melancholic poem, a hopeful testimony, or simply an enigmatic story. Some say it’s about love, others see it as an anti-war film, and others, rightfully so, interpret it as a meditation on the importance of our actions—words become meaningless if our faith is not strong enough. All of these interpretations are, to some extent, valid, but one thing is certain: in this film, image and sound work in perfect harmony to create one of the most immersive cinematic experiences…

So on the nose and expositional.
    Very much predictable.
That ending?! An absolute fucking joke.
Listing out every single plot hole is a waste of time.
For a film that tries to criticize the male gaze, it had a ridiculous amount of sexualizing and objectifying shots.

Get a grip for crying out loud.
