The Charlie character was a complete fantasy projection. Who is he? What does he want? What does he like about Howie? Perhaps there’s the shrewd observation that the gay upper middle class professional characters are boring and vacuous to the point where they almost lack interiority let alone personalities, and therefore are only desirable because they are rich and (mostly) white. Well observed. But the lingering feeling after the romance plots are tied up, is that the landed gentry, despite how boring and vacuous they may be, will always win, whether it’s in the sexual marketplace of Regency England or fire island in 2020s.

The whole thing is a dirge for a dying afternoon. I never felt like the movie tapped into Bernstein’s vitality. Carey does a lot with what could have been a turgid and thankless role. On the plus side, I will say Bradley cooper’s narcissistic projection is maybe less shame based and grandiose than when Matt Damon wrote “Good Will Hunting”.
