  Hard to put this into words as I'm trying to untangle my feelings about this movie - but this made me feel very conflicted, perhaps even angry. There could have been so many ways to explore Ani's character yet it feels like Baker was only ever just trying to show her through the prism of her work or the gaze of other men. I really wish it had expanded on her story and background and other relationships - these scenes…

  + Daniel Craig, gorgeous photography, outfits!!!!!, studio classic feel, yearning so hard it materialises on screen, grit and sweat and tears (one, on Gene's cheek, as he lays down pretending to sleep)

  - the movie is slightly drawn out, wish Lee had learned to read the room

  This is an ode to the forgiveness of nature against the brutality of humankind. It is a story of survival against all odds, and a plea for more humane, sustainable, and collaborative societies. Miyazaki's earliest work at Ghibli is vibrant with themes that he refuses to tone down with romance or fantasy, like the urgency of climate change, the insanity of nuclearism, and anti-imperialism. It is therefore one of his harshest, and perhaps most genuine, films.
