There are a lot of problems with this movie (e.g., whitewashing and centralizing Shaw as a character; pushing the narrative along with patriarchal pseudodialectics), but when the focus is on the Black men who volunteered to die to liberate the enslaved people of the south, it offers an image of transcendent ("Evental") revolutionary heroism.

Howard Hawks is a great filmmaker but goddamn do I hate John Wayne.

Second time watching. Sobbing at the end.

There's so much I can say about how i loved this. It's amazing to follow up such a great movie with another great movie. I love the characters and the acting. It's one of the best-looking big budget movies I've ever seen. It has images that feel iconic as I'm watching them. But i'll just conclude quickly by saying how satisfying this movie is: it's so rich (the world-building is still rich and fresh 45 years later) and so well-paced. I was not left wanting or feeling overstuffed. It's basically perfect.
