Technicolour glorious Greece, circa 50's and Sophia Loren in her debut film at the tender age of 23. What more could one want? Opening song sung by Julie London accompanied by underwater, shimmering shots.. mesmerizing. The film lags about halfway through. But the opening half, and the final quarter were great. A slow burn from Claude Chabrol with intense, riveting performances from the 2 leads - Isabelle Huppert and Sandrine Bonnaire - that you know, is not going to end well. And hadn't even read the Ruth Rendall story the film is based on, but this is Chabrol at his finest. Loads of class themes, thrown on their head by the pleasant bourgeois family, the illiterate Bonnaire character as newly hired "housekeeper", the histories of both women, with their shared dubious pasts. All leading to the shocking ending. Brilliant.

Kiss of the Spider Woman meets Lassie. This movie shouldn't work, and the story admittedly a tad weak, but what it lacks in storyline it more than makes up with the knock-out performance by Caleb Landry Jones. Killer performance as he morphs from abused and traumatized youth forced to live with caged dogs, to star drama student at the home for juvenile delinquents he ends up at, to running the local dog shelter to.. to.... drag performer! Luc Besson strikes…
