This movie has a solid beginning and a decent ending, but there's a long middle section that just didn't work for me at all. Reading the reviews now, I'm wondering what I missed. Was Ryan Gosling's quest-to-save-jazz storyline not completely silly?
I enjoyed this more than I expected to -- pretty cheesy, but it doesn't take itself too seriously. The brother character was pretty funny, I thought, and the emo son had some (possibly unintentional) great lines.
There's something about the character of the lonely Cold War spy that just plugs directly into my brain and makes me feel things. More than anyone, George Smiley just has that perfect balance of weary melancholia and smart, patient bad-assery.
"Look in her eyes. Her poor brain's just made a discovery: emptiness in the moonlight."
