    “he kept talking about propriety!”

a sizzling & delicious picture sur une groupe des riches who are in equal measure horrid & fascinating; it’s quite a feat Renoir’s ability to balance the degree of narrative complexities with a satire so caustic & hilariously pointed; those poor baby rabbits :(

probably has to be the movie on the weight of corporate mechanized greed; this could have been a very color-by-numbers diluted telling of a fascinating story but luckily Mann is working with a different set of paintbrushes; “the truth is not the point”, the demoralization & destruction is not a side effect, it is the point; this is shown in the dual processes by which decisions are made, both to obscure the truth and protect corporate interests; pacino provides an unbelievably cathartic performance because sometimes we really just have to yell about all this bullshit

no film besides this one explores the ominous link between sexuality and death in such a lucid and uncanny manner. of all kubrick’s movies, this one still feels the most uncomfortable — the lurking danger at every corner in the middle of a massive city . the christmas lights beckoning you deeper into an inescapable hell world . p.s. the closeup shots of the masks with those piano notes in the back is still one of the scariest images put to film my god

    “everyone was fucking.”

haneke’s inland empire (and no i will not elaborate). shot in an incredibly sterile and flat way, as the story builds it becomes more difficult to separate the film from the tapes themselves. the lines blur until the audience is dizzy, lost, on the edge of their seat. anchored by some incredibly passionate lead performances, and a supremely focused haneke, this film is fireworks.
