Watched this with Justin Hurwitz conducting the score live at Carnegie Hall, which in and of itself was a 5/5 experience.
This movie really won me over with it's romanticism by the end, not just in Mia & Sebastian's love story, but in the characters' overall outlook on life. Damien Chazelle elevates this message with wonderfully fantastical set-pieces, often concluding in a sharp jolt back to reality. Great soundtrack, engaging performances, and nice to look at.
Arrival challenges the core mechanics of communication as we know it. We take the linear, time-bound nature of language for granted. It’s so fundamental to how we understand the world around us that most of us couldn’t imagine anything different.
That’s what makes Arrival so exceptionally creative. It upends the foundations of language and time to present a novel outlook on human perception. Villeneuve makes this approachable by grounding his sci-fi explorations in human stories of heartbreaking loss and global conflict. With an ethereal soundtrack and emotive cinematography to boot, Arrival stands tall as a masterpiece of science fiction.
