Rewatching all of the pirates films here we go.
This is probably going to be the best one already. Such a simple premise that pulls you in immediately. The use of the song from the original Disneyland ride at the start gives this film (and to an extent the series as a whole but we’ll get to that) such a unique identity.
There are so many jokes that I’m amazed they got away with in a 12 rated Disney film.…
Beautiful.
Andrew Garfield’s character feels like such a real person that I often found myself forgetting it was him. He’s got so many little eccentricities that I know Garfield spent ages thinking about. What a phenomenal actor.
But this is Florence Pugh’s film and she is the best she has ever been. Such a raw, unapologetic performance. You can see every desire behind her eyes and every frustration that comes with that desire.

One of the funniest films I’ve seen in a long time. The script is so tight and witty for such an absurd premise. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling work so well together but the real star of this film is Angourie Rice who was 15 at the time but is able to stand toe to toe with the two more experienced actors comedically. The performances almost make up for the looser ends of the plot.

I really thought Jack Black was in this film more than he is. Kate Winslet has more screen time and chemistry with the old man.
Out of the two story lines it really does feel like Cameron Diaz and Jude Law take priority which is fine. Jude Law having kids is a fun twist that makes it not completely your run-of-the-mill Romcom.
Aretha Franklin playing at the end nearly made me cry. Not so much because of what was happening on screen but fuck me that song. Great choice.
