Gangs of New York 2002
This movie is a bafflingly mixed bag, so I’m going to do this as a pros and cons list.
Pros
1. Daniel Day Lewis. He marshals such intensity, everyone else is a candle held against the sun.
2. The film contains such variety, the camera moves so fast; it’s such a sensory experience encompassing the weird, the irrelevant, the ugly, the profane. Really reminds me of one line in the excellent opening monologue of Angels in America: ‘this melting pot…
