Cool period piece, and one with a very strong and interesting core theme that fits the time incredibly well, and it's surprisingly self-critical for a japanese movie about Japan. Campy performances and goofy final scene aside (especially as the penultimate scene is very beautiful) it made me connect to the human characters in a way that a monster /disaster movie never has. Really helps that Godzilla is menacing, cruel and scary. Especially when he fires his iconic Atomic Breath, it feels like no main character is safe. Love the 40s level of technology and how it's used too. A very human kaiju movie indeed.

It's for sure put well together, has some great performances and love the 30 year spanning of the plot. There were some cool shots and I love the "diss" that the main character pulled off. For such a long well received movie I expected it to hit a little more. Maybe if I can identity a specific thing, I've seen major themes and elements of this movie (the stress of making art, breakdown of the American dream/immigration struggles and especially rich (families) suck) quite a lot in recent movies and I didn't feel like it added too much to any of these.
