Egoyan loves his home country Canada as much as non-linear narratives, but his typical tone of alienation clashes with this trashy thriller plot. He gets a career-high dramatic turn from fellow Canadian Ryan Reynolds, and while this tale could have been so much more unpleasant, it doesn’t get much better once the larger story comes into shape. Frankly, it gets pretty laughable, and like fellow A24 release The Sea of Trees, it remains as a misfire on a good director’s filmography.

God's Creatures 2022
Heavy and bleak, this Irish drama spares no one grief. While it shares a bit of premise with Bong’s film Mother, the content is less sensational and grapples with rape culture in a small town and how it can destroy the simple semblance of trust. Paul Mescal and Emily Watson had pretty big boosts in their careers last year, so see how they have been forging their thespian muscles.

Still looks very rough, but some solid jokes that didn’t make it through and others which are much better in the aired version. We are lucky that this piece of animation history has been found again.

RAZZIES 2025 NOMINEE: Jon Voight is so convincing as an elderly man filled with regret, forgotten by a country that once respected him.
