I first watched this having never heard of Lupin III, and it's honestly the best way: each new character that fans would have recognized was a delightful surprise. Every film should feature the main characters mentioning, an hour in, that they should call on their friend the samurai with the sword who can cut through anything.

Anyway, I adore this movie, tons of fun, incredibly stylish, just an all-around good time. I don't think I can call this my favorite Miyazaki (I can't honestly say it's better than Princess Mononoke) but it's very funny that it's so close lmao

the fun thing about this film is the original story is a totally coherent sci-fi epic, grand in scale but with very concrete powers and stakes. but between massively condensing it to movie length + a language barrier giving everything an extra sense of distance, by the time it hits an American audience it's a total fever dream, all themes and ideas and imagery. which, to be clear, rules: maybe the coolest vibes of any film, ever

This film says it plainly: the vampire is hunger, is desire itself, and thus is also death. Everyone is drawn to…

it's always cool to go see a film everyone agrees is great and go... oh. yeah. this rules. like, that score really is the best ever. spielberg really is the goat. it's exactly as good as you'd think.

but delightful that besides all the iconic things I knew, there were still surprises! I didn't know beforehand that hooper was a sassy nerd! I didn't realize what a drama queen quint was! (I'm surprised I haven't seen more comparisons with him…
