Sally Field and Kevin Kline in a catty satire of daytime TV - what else could you want? Well, um... an ending that's not gross, for starters. But even beyond that, I think this movie suffers a lot in comparison to obvious reference points like A Fish Called Wanda and Tootsie, which have real plots and not just froth. Stacked cast, though - crazy that you've got RDJ and Whoopi in this and they're not even in the top five most delightful performances.

The post-credits bit where we see footage of the real Thelma (the writer's grandma, I think?) sort of exposes why this film doesn't really soar beyond "polite smiling" territory - it's hard to capture just what makes you love your grandma in a film script without it feeling artificial on some level, in a way that I guess is true of all cinema? But it's especially obvious here that this is a wacky scenario. Still, very good-natured movie.
RIP to Richard Roundtree, who's fantastic in this.
