Imitation of Life 1959
This one didn’t work for me. The film depicts a lot of rich topics — race, womanhood, ambition, motherhood — without saying anything about them. It treats those topics with dignity but it’s not well acted. There’s nonstop melodrama but it’s actually kind of boring because the characters are flat. I feel obligated to give it some sort of praise because it’s well regarded but I’m really grasping at straws here.

This movie is way more thought provoking than I expected. It’s also laugh out loud funny and all of the town’s people playing themselves are pitch perfect. People are playing fast and loose with their Christianity and their ideas about which murders are bad and which aren’t. Everyone is benefitting from their conclusions about the murder and they gotta save face. I do think this movie could have benefited from the editing choice of showing the killing early followed by exploring all the different reactions.
