This movie and this book will forever have my whole heart.  I was first introduced to it when my mom (a third grade teacher) fell in love with it and made it a part of her class curriculum.  Being the son of a teacher, you can imagine I was the test drive for so many books.  This one stands out above all of them.

With an aesthetic that has shaped my entire world, this coming of age story strikes…

A real ‘turn your brain off’ action film of the early oughts.  I have to be honest…. this is my favorite decade of cinema 😂.

Nothing really important (although it’s fascinating to see the ways that international relations and narratives have not changed much in the 20 some years since this film was made).  I couldn’t help but contextualize this movie’s release directly after the terrorist attacks of 2001.  Images of a mushroom cloud wiping out an entire stadium on…

‘I’ve been playing a character my whole life.’

This movie is powerful.  A film that celebrates the the contradictory joys of theatre; the gift of escaping from your life to step into the shoes of another while simultaneously accessing the most recessed parts of yourself.

Colman Domingo gives a completely grounded and free performances.  I couldn’t look away from him.  And half of these men (graduates of the theatre program at Sing Sing) are better actors as I have seen on screen in a long while.

Finally.  More films about platonic, male intimacy and authentic vulnerability.  These are powerful and world changing bonds on screen.

The Coen Brothers are masterful story tellers.  And Frances’ ability to craft a character even through an accent that some would call ‘silly’ should be studied.

Not only is this good film making, it was fun to watch.
