Pride & Prejudice 2005
For some reason I was under the impression that Joe Wright’s filmmaking grew exponentially throughout his first 3 major films. I would not have guessed he came out swinging this hard from the beginning. This is actually an immaculate film. Jaw-droppingly beautiful. It shows that if you care, and pay attention to the details, you can craft even a common pop storyline into incredibly deep art.
Side note: I scrambled to Wikipedia to see what Oscar’s this film had won in 2005. And it’s zero… if I ran a film studies class, I’d show this movie as an assignment.

Cabaret 1972
Berlin has atmosphere. The historic backdrop looms over the entire film and drives it forward. The editing and cinematography are beautiful. The characters and story are unique and fascinating to watch unfold.
The broadway musical is darker and goes a bit deeper, it’s a more tightly nit story of the cabaret venue and the boarding house the characters live in. With less tangents there is more focus to the gritty plot and the rising politics in 1930’s Germany.
