I have run out of time. I have lost it all. So I can't work fast enough to catch up. I can't run fast enough to catch up. And the only thing that catches me up is doing my magic act.
James Caan's Frank comes across a bit more gruff and brash than the professional criminals Mann would introduce us to later in his career (namely McCauley from Heat and Vincent from Collateral), but Frank's bristly attitude brings a level…
Above average Western tale with some surprising humor and bleakness woven throughout. Phoenix and Reilly really mesh as the effective but occasionally dysfunctional hired gun siblings, struggling through the harshness of the frontier after a valuable prospecting formula. On the other end of the pursuit are Ahmed (Warm) and Gyllenhaal (Morris), a much more compassionate and intellectual duo in contrast to their violent and brutish pursuers.
The film applies some traditional Western themes, but man vs nature and the power…
Campy, gory, and disjointed exploitation service that takes itself a tad to serious at times. Clearly borrowing heavily from other Vietnam films, the derivative plot and bland dialogue weigh down the film that is mostly kept afloat by the over the top violence and campy action sequences. Still enjoyable enough as some B tier macaroni combat.
Overall a pretty poor movie but still worth a watch if "Macaulay Culkin as a child sociopath" sounds intriguing to you. Elijah Wood is a bit better cast but all the performances fall flat for me, with a few unintentionally funny lines but mostly boring dialogue. Feels more like a drama than a suspense feature, even when Culkin is clearly up to some nefarious hijinks. It has potential to be a tense thriller but ultimately falls well short of the mark.
Some fun world building and the mixing of swords and sorcery on an 80s backdrop make Highlander an entertaining oddity we don't really see the likes of anymore. Lambert as the wry hero and Connery as the charismatic mentor are decent enough, but Clancy Brown is the scene stealer as the over-the-top menacing villain. Throw in some Queen tracks and you've got an 80s essential, far from perfect and a bit cheesy but ultimately enjoyable.
