My third Altman movie and easily my least favorite. Surprised to say so, bc the reviews on here were glowing. Part satire, part thriller, part commentary on the movie industry.
The cameos were fun, the acting is excellent, and the script is tight. But it didn’t really wow me.
The shot of the knee in the mud bath rules though.
Revisiting this after watching The Return and it is even better. Maybe the most rewatchable series ever?
I can totally see why this bombed as a standalone though.

Ozu level framing, god tier level costumes, and a banging soundtrack. This film blue ball’d me so hard it hurt, but that is kind of the point.
I was choosing between this or Come and See and chose this one bc I wanted an uplifting romance film. BOY WAS I WRONG.
Granted it is still beautiful — just a punch in the gut that they never have their love flourish.
What a "fantabulous" adaption! I was running through the list with my brother and this is certainly a contender for best musical adaptation...ever? Kind of wild, but seeing Wicked on stage pulled the same reaction from me ("How good could a fanfic adaption of Wizard of Oz really be??"
