The hilariously grim story of a man who is used as a vessel in a Biblical battle of good and evil to unleash and sustain the presence of evil in a crumbling and increasingly damaged hellscape waiting to be destroyed. At least that's how I interpret it on a second watch.

The wide shots in the first half or so are framed beautifully, and I love how Miike uses these browns and whites to frame the somewhat banal seaside settings of the offices, taverns and houses that the characters dwell in to hammer home this sort of soothing yet eerie environment of old wealth and privilege that these characters inhabit.
