    The Alto Knights

    ★★½

Being a Mob film staring Robert De Niro and written by Nicholas Pileggi accounts for the majority of my enjoyment of The Alto Knights.

De Niro plays bother Frank Costello and Vito Genovese with significant variation and nuance that both feel distinct, separate individuals. Decent support acting accompany these roles. Great set design and costuming flesh out the rest of the positive elements.

The Alto Knights shoehorns in a mockumentary aspect and some standard Pileggi writing that give the film a…

    Black Bag

    ★★★★½

Black Bag is a dialogue driven spy thriller that starts intensely and doesn’t relent until the end.

This film is a masterclass in dialogue crafting. Soderbergh elevates every scene with beautiful, deep dialogue. Even scenes that would otherwise be considered mundane are lifted to a place of importance with delightful subtext and nuance.

I’ve only seen two Soderbergh films, but they have immediately made me a massive fan. I plan on binging the rest of his filmography soon.

A convoluted mess of a fever dream.

Coppola connects contemporary America with the Fall of Ancient Rome. Which works thematically with the content at hand. However, the meaning of the majority of the metaphorical elements is shrouded to the viewer.

Almost all of the CGI is terrible and keeps the focus off the content of the scene. Although, there are some really fun elements to the editing.

The performances fluctuate from great to terrible, sometimes in the middle of scenes…

    Love Hurts

    This movie is terrible.
I knew this going to see it.
And I was still surprised at how bad this movie is.

The writing is lazy. Most of the comedy hinges on poorly written dialogue.

The pacing is both formulaic and all over the place simultaneously. There’s too many flashbacks and the use of inner monologue occurs at random places that doesn’t help the narrative l.

The action sequences are too over the top in an ungrounded way. It’s not…
