Dustin Hoffman's acting in this is goddamn genius, how does he do so much by standing still?
You know that line from Cesaire, "fascism is colonialism turned inwards"? That's what this movie is about, about how the reckless, cynical war on terror stuff we did in Afghanistan and Iraq via the CIA and all these military-trained 'independent contractors' starts getting done no longer way over there but right on the edge, in the borderlands, and so, soon enough, fully within.
I often want to figure out, as I'm watching a film, what it's *really* about. The Towering Inferno is really about the need for more stringent fire safety standards in the building code.
HOW is this not recognized as the feminist classic it is? We did it with Gaslight, and it's time to do the same with this movie: when a woman is coerced into the particular false consciousness of loving her role as exploited domestic servant, such that she accepts as fair recompense for her work nothing more than the pleasure of her exploiters, she is OVERBOARD.
