The Green Knight 2021
Lowrey crafted this adaptation into a striking and timely parable that drives home the point that being young, inexperienced, or immature is never an excuse to act without honor. Admittedly, his preference for emotionally dense but dialogue light storytelling won’t be for everyone. And if the film has a flaw, it's in the pace that disrupts the addictive, tumultuous rhythm that is the driving pulse behind this director’s signature mix of sight and sound.
His directorial choices can, and certainly…

The Underground Railroad 2021
When Barry Jenkins aims to deconstruct tropes and reinvigorate entire genre, he doesn’t miss. Masterpiece is barely an adequate word for The Underground Railroad.
Barry Jenkins’s adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Underground Railroad, is a brilliant ten-hour odyssey tailored to unsettle, engage, and captivate. Jenkins not only elevates Whitehead’s story, he masterfully bends the Southern Gothic genre to his will.

Babygirl 2024
Babygirl is narratively stunted and inexplicably imperfect. It feels written by someone with surface level knowledge (or little respect for ethical play). No people (at least it feels that way) deeply involved in "the scene" had a foundational part on this project.
The cast ensemble is strong. But it's not enough to over come Babygirl's core worldbuilding flaws. It's like someone just read a shit ton of dark romance novels and slapped together a checklist to flesh things out.

Napoleon 2023
NAPOLEON is unimaginative, uninspired, and unrelentingly dry. The score and sound design are masterful, but Scott expects them to do too much work in this inert bolder of a story. It's doesn't even give good costume drama - and I say that as a lover of costume dramas.
There are Ridley Scott movies I'll defend against all comers. This isn’t one of them. Because this man forced me to sit through a visual sludge as a 2 hr 38 min…

Cha Cha Real Smooth 2022
Building an ensemble whose sole purpose is to facilitate the maturation of a shiftless, irritatingly petulant, man who crutches on alcohol and excuses ain't it.
Wasted secondary character storylines that had far more interesting potential. Plus, It be great if infidelity could stop being framed as a perfectly normal way to build intimate relationships with women.
Then again, it be great if narratives centering a man in need of direction had him decide to not be an anchor around the…
