  Watching this and Aliens as a member of the younger generation has been kind of amusing in that both movies feel like I'm seeing the blueprint for nearly every video game I've ever played my whole life.

  Every goddamn shadow, doorway, bush, street, front porch, car, camera pan, etc feels perfectly placed; a sonata of pure tension in the context of suburban communal paranoia. The elegance of late 70s / early 80s Carpenter is astonishing.

  The sweet spot of nostalgic cultural regurgitation and renewal. Impossible to replicate. Every filmmaker that tried to copy this for 15+ years is missing the point. A behemoth of so many images and sounds from decades prior that it becomes a projection of the zeitgeist itself. The looping circle of nostalgia > style > substance > nostalgia personified at the only point in time it could have been. No wonder he decided to do something like Jackie Brown after this.
