    Heat

    ★★★★★

HEAT begins like any typical heist, slowly introducing us to the pieces that will comprise its squad. We are also introduced to the members of the police force tasked to track them down. Yet around 30 minutes in, something begins to shift. Slowly, characters begin to drift into the periphery. Until eventually, hours into this epic, even Neil’s best friend, Chris, drifts into the background. And what we find in their absence is a drama played out between two men…

Rainer Maria Rilke once said that a life’s destiny was nothing more than the ‘felt pressure of sense you knew as a child’. I’ve always found ‘pressure of sense’ to be a very poignant flip of our typical ‘sense of pressure’. In many ways, this reversal of words conjures an inversion of meaning.

    Burden of Dreams

Fascinating to see how much of a craftsman Herzog is. For him, dreams are truly this matter-of-fact Aristotelian framework that demand to be realized. Really fun film to inaugurate my time here in TO. I genuinely had butterflies on the way to this bad boy, just so excited to be in theatres again. And I think this is finally my first solo movie-going experience? Why did it take me this long?? Crowd was a ton of fun and the Revue is awesome. It is 100 years old! People were probably just watching videos of trains in that theatre and running for the hills! Now…

    Miracle Mile

Takes a lot of what After Hours dished out a few years prior and shapes the night-time chaos into a completely different realm. While After Hours’ winding journey is fuelled by a series of selfish maneuvers, so much of Miracle Mile is driven by Harry’s matter-of-fact kindness. And this actually brings the movie into stronger terrain than I believe After Hours ever reaches. Although it’s a movie that stumbles through its first act like you would expect from a cult…
