    In Bruges

    100/100

In Bruges' ability to transition it's silly introduction and overall nature to an ultra-deep and moody character story blows my mind every time I experience it. I'm laughing, gripped, and finally thoughtful as I'm undoubtedly left with the film occupying brain space for the next week.

Of it's several themes, In Bruges play on the idea of purgatory is the most poignant. Mirroring the film's setting and narrative, it's a place awaiting judgement, in between heaven and hell, where…

    90/100

Another predictable hit by Bong Joon-Ho, Mickey 17 's wonderful eccentricity and conceptual success makes this film a completely unique delight while also being backed by great performances, fantastic world building, and a well-rounded plot.

While having a narrative that is ultimately a pretty simplistic character story about letting go and regaining confidence (or being okay with "pressing the button"), this film doesn't get wrapped up in bareboned-ness. On the contrary, it's Sci-Fi-Comedy-Drama genre blending and its great eccentric…

    Mother

    77/100

Mother's narrative is edge-of-your-seat stuff, but I just wish this film had a little something extra going for it, visually or conceptually. The focus subject matter of intellectual disabilities doesn't feel totally well-rounded to me; this film is more focused on parental relationships, specifically the titular one, in addition to delivering its plot.

This is a captivating story following the incredibly Kim Hye-ja performed Mother as she seeks to control and protect her son's well-being, dramatically put to a…

    Renfield

    ★★★

    64/100

It’s hard not to like the fun concept of Renfield, where we get to explore toxic relationships through the comedic lens of the one between Dracula and his familiar. However, while good for a few quick chuckles and enjoyable-enough action, it’s a mostly forgettable adventure due to being a little roughly put together and some issues with timing.

This is a really good example of “hey, I have a great idea for a movie!” that’s just conceptual but nothing…

    The Terminator

    ★★★★

    89/100

The Terminator has an awesome concept/screenplay handled and executed really well.

The quality of this I don't think comes from the world building (which is pretty cool in its own right and sets a good stage, but doesn't offer a huge amount in this installment), but the solid logic and exciting flow of the plot.

Two beings drop into the modern day naked and scavenge for supplies preparing for an unknown mission while the audience tries to figure out…
