I'd never seen this before! Watched with my sister and nephew, who is obsessed with casinos and keeps asking everyone if they want to play poker, though I think he found the plot a bit difficult to follow. Anyway. It's a fun caper, very funny dialogue at times and nice to feast your eyes on the two most handsome men of their generation in their prime. Didn't love the fact that Julia Roberts was apparently an entirely tradeable and stealable commodity! But the true romance is clearly between George and Brad with all those smouldering looks and telepathic understanding anyway.
I thought this was a really fun caper with a lot of heart. Mikey Madison is absolutely luminous – couldn't take my eyes off her. I laughed a lot, but it won my heart too. That said, NO caper needs to be two and half hours long and there was quite a bit of fat that could have been trimmed.
I think I'm alone in everyone I know who's seen this in liking the bleak ending, which I thought was set up well from the earliest possible moment, had a lot of emotional truth and packed an appropriate punch.
I was very curious going to see this about why Steve McQueen (whose work I lovelovelove) was getting involved in a plucky Britain WW2 trope story. I should have had more faith in him. I haven't read any press about this film, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if he has read Juliet Gardiner's incredible social history of the Blitz, and Paul Gilroy on the 'myth of the Blitz', alongside Boys' Own adventures and, appropriately enough as it's London,…
Enjoyed this very much indeed! I love a Robert Harris and this is a great, and visually stunning, adaptation of a fun and thrilling story with an ending that is at once lovely, provocative and in keeping with the history, if not the tradition, of the Papacy.
