I do like a film that, when you finish watching it, you wonder “what was that all about then?”. Colin Farrell pretty much reprises his role from Bruges, minus the psychopathic tendencies. Brendan Gleason stretches himself a little more to play a grumpy folk musician who suddenly realises his life is going nowhere, and blames his friend. To punish him he cuts off his own fingers, which then of course kill Colin’s donkey. All set against the backdrop of the Irish civil war over on the mainland. So what was it actually about? I will be happy to watch it again and try and find out.

Settled down for a nice Saturday evening morality tale in an environment you don’t often see in film, without having read any reviews. So wasn’t quite ready for the graphic violence throughout it. The phrase “ok we get it now” was on fairly regular repeat. Other than that there was some fairly standard “colonialism is bad” and  “racism is bad” stuff, a good twist on the road movie genre and a reasonably satisfying denouement.

Not sure if “beautiful “ is the right word but the cinematography and attention to detail in this film is incredible. The lighting, scenery, sound and everything are all directed to make this one of the spookiest experiences I’ve ever had. Even the sound of wine pouring into a goblet gets the pulse racing. The story is a classic (ie old and would never get past a publisher if written today) the cast (particularly Willem Defoe) get that understatement has no place. Plenty of blood and (literally) guts on show but there’s far more to this than schlock. Film of the year so far…

A feel good movie with a stellar cast that left me slightly indifferent- probably because the scientist movie genre is becoming a bit full now ( I just also watched Hidden Figures which is pretty much the same story). Bill Nighy plays a grumpy Bill Nighy as always, and while the film focuses on Jean Purdy’s lack of recognition it doesn’t seem to register the same for Muriel, the West Indian 4th member of the team who isn’t granted a surname.
