Utterly hypnotic and unbelievably horny, in a way only Kubrick could successfully pull off. Eyes Wide Shut is a masterpiece from the late auteur, a cinematic puzzle box of intrigue and depravity which makes the nearly three-hour runtime fly by. Cruise and Kidman give (arguably) career best performances, which allow the audience to sink into uncertainty of the narrative seamlessly. Every shot is a fucking audio-visual masterpiece, which gives the film a beautiful, yet deeply unsettling aesthetic. Anyone who doesn’t appreciate Eyes Wide Shut, doesn’t appreciate Kubrick in his purest and most polished form. A new all-time favorite that I cannot wait to revisit.

Fritz the Cat 1972
Enjoyed this more than I probably should, even if there’s not much to chew on beyond Fritz The Cat’s sleazy sex hijinks. For every clever animated sequence that makes the film an enjoyable experience, there’s about twenty-pairs of animal boobs that do the opposite. If I ever catch up on my mid-century neoliberal history, I’ll inevitably want to revisit this (but I don’t see that happening anytime soon).

American Beauty 1999
If nothing else, you have to respect the fact that American Beauty even exists. A genre-less, self-loathing satire on the horrors of middle class American life, which somehow swept the 1999 Oscars. Looking at the state of cinema today it’s hard to believe that a film this devoid of irony could ever make waves the way American Beauty did, and yet it’s consistently cited as one of the most important works in modern American movies. Time has not been nice…

Sherlock Hound: The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle / Treasure Under the Sea 1984
Yes, the Sherlock Hound TV movie is better than Dune 2.

Mickey 17 2025
Deeply upsetting to watch the post-Parasite, Adam McKay-ification of my favorite filmmaker. Mickey 17 is an over-stuffed and underdeveloped anomaly of a film, signaling the beginning of the end for Bong’s reign as a globally beloved auteur. The screenplay bites off way more than it can chew, reminding you of all the other South Korean satires you’d rather be watching (Parasite does the class thing better, Snowpiercer does the sci-fi dystopian thing better, Okja does the animal rights thing better, etc). It’s…
