One of Kubrick's best, with the ending especially being one of the most powerful, soul-penetrating moments in all of cinema.

The decision to make this a musical was a good call, as the ornate, hallucinated showtime sequences are definitely the highlight of the film. Folie à Deux is otherwise an interesting-in-theory reflection on the unexpected, mostly undeserved success and prestige the first film brought for writer/director Todd Phillips, but it fails to develop these ideas or any other compelling qualities for the majority of its runtime. For how much instant notoriety this film attained for alienating most of its audience, it's surprisingly tepid.

For how almost perfectly it delivers on great sets, costumes, comedy (especially where Ken is concerned), and music numbers, the film is held back by its brutish method of delivering its feminist messaging. Every idea that could have been more gracefully implied is instead monologued. Practically every scene in the second and third act suffer from this. Still a fun blockbuster with a lot of personality though.
