genuinely don't have anything productive to say about this film's philosophical prescriptions writ large (though if pressed i might be inclined to say audiard could have approached this trans lead with a little more... tact), but the first hour of this is banger after certified banger. really great use of dramatic lighting and blocking in each number including, yes, the vaginoplasty song, about which i think people are incorrectly surmising that the filmmakers were not in on the joke, but i digress. my biggest hangup is that at some point this film forgets it's a musical, and ultimately becomes much less interesting for it.

obviously great but missing the intimate perspective and painterliness that are the hallmark of baker's oeuvre. i think both red rocket and the florida project's approaches to the precarity of sex work are more thoughtful and compelling, if maybe less conventionally fun or suspenseful. throughly enjoyed the real-time road trip antics of annie and armenians, and there's a very subtle throwaway gag in this where ivan just has a menorah in his house as decoration and that made me laugh probably more than anything else from 2024. frankly bizarre choice for an academy darling but i definitely think this deserves best editing. also mikey madison...

at one point, regina king asks doctor manhattan if he feels bad about doing a genocide in vietnam and he says "meh we all do things we regret i guess" and she's just like "oh ya true." ascribing a malignant neoliberal politic to dr manhattan just feels so wrong, but i expected no less from damon lindeloff, who literally told alan moore to fuck off when he decided to produce this trash. written by people who haven't quite read the source material so much as looked at the pretty pictures. a fun watch but cannot in good conscience credit this show for anything. one star!
