Night Is Short, Walk On Girl 2017
Difficult to give a shit about Yuasa’s stunning visual sensibilities when the protagonists are paper-thin, eye-rolling freshman cliches.
The world these characters inhabit is mostly fun and silly. It’s a near psychedelic wonderland made out of a night life district populated with goofy drunks and college students putting on an elaborate school festival. The journey is a series vignettes as we stop and meet striking characters with whimsical goals and fantastical origins, all, ostensibly, just out for a night on the town.
So, plenty of good vibes, but very little of substance.

True Grit 2010
I was bracing for more Cormac McCarthy bleakness, but I found instead a prevailing sense of warmth and decency. True Grit is explicitly about how within the rough and often murderous living of the wild west, there are pockets of humanity, and that humanity is contagious. It's a joy to follow Mattie as she wins over or exhausts the most curmudgeonly sons-of-bitches to get closer and closer to getting justice for her father.
