    I don’t think the bad reviews are justified, I think it’s just aimed at a younger audience than the usual Russo brothers fan base. If I was 10 I’m sure I would have loved it. 

    I don’t think the story, a mixed bag of high concept sci-fi and generic drama, justifies its budget but I thoroughly enjoyed the early 90’s setting.

    It’s a product of its time which is both good and bad. It’s beautifully hand drawn with landscapes and characters that look like oil paintings instead of simple cell shading and that’s its strong point.  The animation itself suffers a little from some cheap time saving tricks like panning and zooming on static shots.  It starts out bleak and never lets up…
