That commercial Geico runs every Halloween season did it better

Michael Mann’s THIEF is exceptional in every way. It’s a character study, heist flick, and action film melded into one sensational film. James Caan has never been better. BONUS: My Manhunter/Hannibal-loving heart geeked out when William Petersen and Dennis Farina popped up!

The arrival of a new family digs up secrets long thought buried regarding a decades-old mystery involving a local girl who vanished. How many movies offer motocross, the occult, and the iconic Bette Davis? One of the first horror movies (by Disney, no less!) I ever saw, this has remained a favorite.

Angelina Jolie’s radiant, multilayered performance as the renowned opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larrain’s intoxicating biopic showcases the actress in a way that few of her films have in recent years. MARIA is the final chapter in a loose trilogy that includes Jackie (as in Kennedy) and Spencer (as in Diana). Set during Callas’ final days, the singer is in a reflective mood as she fights to regain the more important thing in her life, the one thing that is tethered to her identity — her ability to sing. Beautifully shot by Oscar nominated cinematographer Ed Lachman, whose artistry is evident in every scene.
