    The Count of Monte Cristo is my favorite novel of all time, so hopes were definitely high for this one. And for the most part, it delivered. It’s beautifully shot and remarkably entertaining; 3 hours went by like nothing. It’s also much more accurate plot wise than the 2002 adaptation.     “We have become so much enlightened as we have become blinded by the gaseous light of science. … if we are to tame darkness, we must first acknowledge that it exists.” A very true sentiment and one that Eggers seems to keep coming back to. Yet he falls short in acknowledging the other side of the coin. Great cinematography and atmosphere can entertain, but for anything to truly resonate, it’s got to say something substantive. In short, all demons but no angels. Also incredibly disturbing - may have caused a nightmare or two.
